The goal of nurses is to provide high-quality care to the patient (Yoder-Wise, 2018, pp. 408), and there is a positive relationship between quality care and patient satisfaction. When quality holistic care is provided to the patient, then there is patient satisfaction (Al-Damen, (2017); Karaca & Durna (2019), which is a measure of how happy or satisfy a patient is with the level of care they receive from the healthcare provider or facility. The effectiveness of the care process or plan is dependent on patient outcome and satisfaction. Patient satisfaction is measured by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. The purpose of this discussion is to measure the effectiveness of pain management intervention in a geriatric medical nursing unit.
Pain is an unpleasant feeling, such as a prick, tingle, sting, burn, or ache which is a signal in the nervous system that something may be wrong (MedlinePlus, 2018). According to Bernhofer et al. (2016), Providing optimal pain care for patients are essential to nursing because unresolved pain is costly to the health care institutions in both monetary terms and lack of patient comfort and satisfaction with care.
In this scenario, I examined the strategies and interventions tried in my unit. From the run chart, I see an overall steady improvement in patient satisfaction with their pain management from July 2015. The improvement shows the importance of educating and training the staff on pain management. The nurse manager and CNO can count on my unit exceeding the national benchmark as shown that the unit’s Patient satisfaction stayed above the national benchmarks of 85 percent “very satisfied” for over six months. If leadership continues with the training and assessment, the trend of increased satisfaction will continue.
While it will be ok for the staff to give each other a pat on the back for having a patient satisfaction rate above the benchmark, the run chart does not support the decision of the unit to celebrate yet. Before the celebration, I think the unit should wait for a whole year of consistent patient satisfaction above the benchmark. To keep the unit consistently above the benchmark for patient pain management satisfaction, nurse manager and the leadership should continue with the staff and patient education as the assessment of the present intervention has shown that patient satisfaction about their pain management can improve with teaching and training of the nurse clinicians and the patients themselves (Bernhofer et al., 2016).
