1. A) In your own words, with references to support your information, define physical activity. Then, write a complete sentence with an example of physical activity.

Physical activity is a body in motion. Playing a sport, running, walking, yoga, anything that gets one on their feet and active. “Physical activity is any form of exercise or movement of the body that uses energy. Some of your daily life activities—doing active chores around the house, yard work, walking the dog—are examples.” (Geogiou, Kreitzer, 2016). Physical activity when it comes to physical education is not limited to traditional sports. As time has gone on activities have incorporated fitness into PE which is critical in teaching students how to be active for the rest of their lives. “Combined with instruction in topics such as nutrition, physical fitness in schools can increase students’ awareness of the role they play in maintaining their own health. Extracurricular activities and sports keep students active and enhance fitness. Physical fitness in schools can take a number of different forms.” (Huguelet, 2012).

B) Do the same for exercise (define and provide example)

Exercise is an activity that is done to improve physical fitness and or health. Organs, muscles, and flexibility are things that will improve with proper health. “The three main types of exercise are cardiovascular exercise, strength training and stretching. All three types of exercise are important for physical fitness.” (ShareCare, 2021). Similar to physical activity running, biking, and lifting weights are good examples of exercise.

C) How will you implement both concepts as a physical educator? If you are not a future PE teacher, how could you implement both personally or in your particular field?

As a physical educator I plan to educate students immediately about the endless benefits of physical activity and exercise. Not only teach them methods and technique but how it will greatly help their mind and body in the long run. Also informing the students how it can help with their academics as well. “Physical activity can have both immediate and long term benefits on academic performance. Almost immediately after engaging in physical activity, children are better able to concentrate on classroom tasks, which can enhance learning.” (Active Living Research, 2015). I believe it is important to introduce this to students early on in their schooling and to keep implementing it throughout their education so that it becomes a habit they take with them into adulthood.

2. A) Discuss your role as a future physical educator.

My role as a physical educator is to not only teach students sports, fitness, physical activity, etc. but also the benefits. I had physical education from kindergarten through high school and never once was taught outside the obvious health benefits how much of an impact it can have. Academics, mental health, and more are strengthened through physical activity. “There is a growing body of evidence indicating that physical activity and fitness can benefit both health and academic performance for children. This research brief reviews published scientific articles that examine how physical activity and fitness may help school-aged children maximize their academic performance. It also provides an overview of the effects of physical activity on the developing brain.” (Active Living Research, 2015). Even the most un-athletic and unenthused student I will attempt to make feel good about their performances during physical education. Achieving even the smallest of goals can build a students confidence.

B) Describe the theory that best aligns with your beliefs and explain how it will be implemented in your PE classes or professional field.

Social Cognitive Theory best aligns with my beliefs as it relates to how I would like to physically educate. Specifically, setting goals is a great way to get even the least enthusiastic student involved and excited to perform. Goals will look different for every student as not all student have the same desires or skill set. “Goals are important because they provide a sense of connection between you and what you want to accomplish. Goals embody your passion, direction and the expectations you have for yourself. In addition, goals allow you to visually see the purpose behind all of the hard work, discipline, and, at times, frustration.” (Kokemuller, 2018). For example a student who hates physical education class potentially because they do not see themselves as athletic can have a goal to run the strait aways as opposed to running the entire mile. Or yesterday they could only do 15 jumping jacks next class let’s shoot for 20. Once the student sees they can reach goals they did not believe it can create motivation.
